Discount chain Lidl going strong - Brief Article

Eurofood, August 31, 2000

German discount chain Lidl is proving a big hit in France, where it has recently opened 84 new stores, putting it streaks ahead of other German discount retailers Aldi and Penny. With a total 805 outlets in France, Lidl is the undisputed market leader. Of the latest 84 stores to be opened, 33 of them were taken over as existing stores and the remaining 51 were built from new.

The rise of German discount stores in France is in sharp contrast to the stagnation currently being experienced by their French counterparts, such as Ed Le Marche and Leader Price. Lidl is building a new head office and distribution centre, which when finished could service far more than the current seven stores it operates in both the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, indicating the possibility that the company is about to expand its activities there.
