Bestfoods to buy Arisco - Brief Article

Eurofood, Feb 17, 2000

US food manufacturer Bestfoods plans to acquire Arisco Produtos Alimenticios, a Brazilian maker of soups and seasonings, for US$440m (?? 449m) and US$262m in assumption of debt. The deal could double the US group's sales in Brazil and provide it with greater stability throughout Latin America, where its performance has been sluggish (see Eurofood, this issue, p11).

Arisco, which has annual sales of US$440m, would be Bestfood's largest acquisition since 1995, when the company purchased the baking arm of Kraft, the food division of US tobacco conglomeate Philip Morris. Arisco is 80% owned by the company's founding family and 20% by Goldman Sachs. The products ranges of the two groups are extremely complementary -- Bestfoods is the group behind the Knorr range of soups.
