Valio halts Oltermanni cheese due to Russian FMD ban - foot-and-mouth disease - Brief Article

As Russia extended its ban on meat and dairy product imports from European Union nations in order to protect itself from foot-and-mouth disease, Finnish dairy firm Valio announced a halt in its Oltermanni cheese production.

Russia has said that the import ban will be lifted following a three-week period during which no new cases of the disease are reported.

Veijo Merilainen, head of Valio's international Operations that the ban has proved particularly harmful to both Finland and Germany, two countries which export a large amount of dairy produce to Russia. Finnish Agricultural officials hope to begin talks with their Russian counterparts sometime within the next week.
