French consume more fish - Brief Article

Eurofood, April 26, 2001

French retail index Federation du Commerce et de la Distribution (FDC) has released figures for March showing a revival in food sales.

Data shows that sales at hypermarkets increased 5.2% compared to March last year, while sales at supermarkets rose by 5.4%. A slight advantage compared to March last year is that this year's figures include an extra Saturday of trade in the month. However, the news will be pleasing for French supermarkets. At the end of last year sales of beef products declined following the BSE scare in France. A statistic which shows that consumer confidence in beef in France may still be low, is that the FCD noted an increase in fish consumption. Since the beginning of the year, sales offish at hypermarkets and supermarkets have risen by 2.7% and 3.7% respectively.
