EU launches beef promotion scheme - European Union - Brief Article - Statistical Data Included

Eurofood, August 2, 2001

The European Commission has launched a one-year campaign to increase beef consumption, depressed by the BSE and foot and mouth crises. Industry groups will run a series of schemes aimed at informing consumers of food safety measures and of the benefits of beef.

The EU will allocate some 12m [European Dollar] to the plan, to start up this autumn. The remaining 40% will come from relevant trade organisations. National governments wanting to run additional schemes will also be given 60% of total costs. Programmes must be submitted to the competent national authorities by 15 August, and an opinion on them delivered to the Commission by 10 September.
