Tesco slammed for misleading its customers - Food Retailing - Tesco PLC accused of false advertising by Advertising Standards Authority - Brief Article

Eurofood, Dec 20, 2001

The UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has wrapped UK supermarket chain Tesco following a complaint from rival firm Sainsbury.

ASA agreed with Sainsbury that Tesco had misled its customers of price differences. Tesco had handed out leaflets in its stores comparing goods that were on special offer in its stores, with the same goods sold at normal retail levels in Sainsbury's stores.

Sainsbury chief executive officer Sir Peter Davis commented, "Tesco selectively chose products on special offer at Tesco but not Sainsbury's. They deliberately misled customers and have now been found out."
