Trolley freedom over? - Food Retailing - shopping carts should stay 'home' - Brief Article

Eurofood, Dec 6, 2001

The days of freedom for the humble shopping trolley appear to be numbered. Abandoned supermarket trolleys are a feature of areas surrounding many stores. However, UK supermarket chain Asda has come up with an idea aimed at stopping the supermarket trolley from going astray.

New technology has been installed on trolley's at the Asda store in Livingston Scotland, which is running a trial scheme. Trolleys have sensor, which swiftly applies the brake if it leaves the stores boundaries or car park.

Allan Miller, store manager in Livingston said, "Over 200 trolleys a week used to disappear from our store and would turn up elsewhere." Miller added that since the new system had been installed, Asda Livingston had not lost a single trolley.
