Slovakian supermarket chain Delvita, which is owned by Belgian firm Delhaize, has reported a 49% year-on-year sales rise during last year. Delvita turned over some SKr1.828bn. The Slovakian concern, which opened a new store in the Slovak capital city Bratislava last year, hopes to open further stores during the course of 2001, with the plan being to have a supermarket in every major Slovak town.

Delvita entered Slovakia in 1998, and the following year purchased eleven stores from Interkontakt. In total Delhaize operates supermarkets in eleven European countries, and in 1999 recorded a net profit of some [euro]169.9m.
