Eurofood, Feb 1, 2001

US fastfood giant McDonald's has reported its global results. System-wide sales passed the US$40bn ([euro]42bn) mark for the year as a whole, and on a constant currency basis, sales for the fourth quarter increased 7%. Sales in Europe, Asia/Pacific, and Latin America increased by 9% when expressed in constant currency terms. McDonald's chairman and CEO Jack M. Greenberg said, "McDonald's served nearly one billion more customers in 2000 than in 1999 and grew earnings per share 10% for the year in constant currencies." He also stated that, "During the year, we added 1 606 McDonald's restaurants, 103 McDonald's dessert-only kiosks," as well as other restaurants operated by other brands.

With reference to McDonald's in Europe, Greenberg pointed out that in constant currency terms, sales for the year increased 9% and 5% for the quarter. "These results were tempered by the recent decline in consumer confidence in the European beef supply." The BSE crisis in Europe is likely to leave McDonald" facing a very tough challenge in Q1 of fiscal 2001. However, the firm did say that it was confident for 2001.
