Japanese supermarket sales fall for the 25th consecutive month - Brief Article - Statistical Data Included

The Japan Chain Store Association (JCSA) has released figures for December 2000 stores sales, which show a drop in like-for-like store sales of 6.5% compared to December 1999. The JCSA has a membership of some 111 firms, representing over 7 200 stores. The figures continue show the on-going decline in supermarket sales, as this latest decrease is the 25[super]th consecutive monthly drop.

Sales in November were down 5.1%, and 4.9% in October. Food sales at Japanese supermarkets totalled [yen]857.48bn ([euro]7.66bn), a decline of 3.5% compared to the same period a year ago.
