Fish is becoming a firm household favourite in Germany, with 83% of Germans eating fish during last year. With food scares, particularly BSE, denting consumer confidence, research shows increasing numbers of people eating fish.

Research from German firm Gfk shows that German households bought an average of 9.2 kilograms, or spent an average of some DM115 (58.7 [European Dollar]) on fish. In total DM3.1bn was spent on fish during the course of 2000. Differences occurred in the German federal regions, with the North consuming 20% more fish than the South. The most popular fish in Germany proved to be Pollack and Herring, which accounted for 50% of sales.
