Unilever to source sustainable Hoki - Brief Article

Eurofood, March 29, 2001

Anglo-Dutch firm Unilever is to offer New Zealand Hoki sourced from sustainable waters. The fish will carry the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) logo, and the Hoki will join Alaskan salmon amongst Unilever's ranks of sustainable fish.

The move is part of Unilever's aim to buy all fish from sustainable sources by 2005, and although Anthony Burgmans, Unilever chairman, admits that the New Zealand Hoki supply will represent only a small portion of the firm's total international fish supply, Burgmans maintains that it is an important step towards achieving Unilever's target.

Hoki is sold by a number of New Zealand fish companies, which together own the Hoki Fishery Management Company. The co-operative was established to improve the management of Hoki fishing in New Zealand. Ross Tucker, chairman at the Hoki company said he was excited with the MSC certification and the new business opportunities created.
