Domino's Pizza UK & IRL has said its sales in the first 15 weeks of 2002 increased by 28.8% on the same period in 2001.

Sales went from 25.7m [pounds sterling] (41.5m [euro]) to 33.1m [pounds sterling] in the first quarter to 14 April 2002.

The UK and Irish subsidiary of the US pizza delivery firm reported average weekly sales for its delivery stores also up by 16.2%.

Like-for-like sales rose by 19.5%. Domino's Pizza said its performance in the UK outstripped the UK market, a claim which is backed up Mintel's report on pizza and pasta, which put market growth at 7% in 2001.

During the first quarter, Domino's Pizza UK & IRL has opened seven new stores meaning it now operates a total of 244 in the UK and Ireland.
