Benecol sales boost Raisio profit - Company News - Brief Article

Finish food and chemicals business Raisio Group showed an improvement during the first six months of 2002, despite turnover for the period remaining flat.

Turnover for July-September rose to 217.5m [euro] compared to 211.5m [euro] for the same period last year, thanks to growth in the Life Sciences unit.

Good sales in Raisio Life Sciences, the unit that makes the cholesterol lowering spread Benecol, helped improve the six-month turnover to 617.9m [euro] from 613.4m [euro] the year before. The unit had been experiencing a long, loss-making run.

The company stated sales of Benecol products rose significantly in Europe and the US over the course of the year. Raisio also said that Benecol's introduction into France and the release of Benecol milk in the United Arab Emirates had produced promising initial results.

Turner over for Raisio Nutrition for the six-month period remained flat year-on-year, while operating profit increased. The transfer of Raisio Nutrition's margarine production from Sweden to Finland and Poland continued according to plan, resulting in a one-time expense of 5m [euro].

Raisio Nutrition turnover in the third quarter was 5.5m [euro]. Despite the losses in the Swedish margarine production, the profitability trend for the Foods business area has been positive, the company said.
