A LITTLE ENCOURAGEMENT

Thank you for the story on Eli and Elsie Marcus, the founders of an adult-education organization in New York City ("Beating The Odds," August). How encouraging that this positive, tenacious company is determined to make a difference, despite the odds.

CHANGES ON THE WAY

I'm writing about your article regarding SBICs ("Capitol Issues," July). It was excellent, but I want to mention things you might find interesting.

A number of incubators are now looking at becoming SBICs. Incubators have, until now, been barred from becoming SBICs, but the SBA recently changed its tune. This could have huge implications for entrepreneurs and businesses that are thinking of starting incubators--it would be a great incentive and perhaps even prompt the creation of many more incubators if they had access to SBA funds under SBIC rules.

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS

I'm a single working mother who has been developing a new product for the past six months. After researching the product's viability, I've found tremendous support for the idea as well as many eager partners. But I'm a nurse in pharmaceutical sales--what do I know about patents, production and profits?

That was my thought until I found your magazine and Web site. Although I'm still in the early to mid stages of getting the product to market, the information you provide is invaluable. I print articles from experts and read their books. Their advice seems to be right on the money.

I wish I had the time necessary to chronicle this journey so others struggling to change their lives--to create their own destinies--could see what resources really are available. I will start this business because of information in your magazine and Web site.

This often-criticized era of Internet technology is what will change my life and the lives of my children. So, to you and your dedicated staff, a resounding thank-you. You've made a difference.
