Suits you just fine: manufacturers are clamoring to build the perfect van for you

Entrepreneur, Dec, 2003 by Jill Amadio

EVERY BUSINESS OWNER'S transportation needs are different. Many want storage bins, racks, cargo organizers and other want storage bins, racks, cargo organizers and other van fittings, while others require cargo partitions or wall panels rather than bucket seats.

Auto manufacturers are responding to more and more requests for custom-fitting vans straight from the factory rather than making customers find and spend extra time and money with aftermarket outfitters. The result is more flexible, utilitarian interiors that can include custom-fitted plastic, wooden and metal shelving.

If you need room for tall items, Dodge's brand-new Sprinter passenger van can be ordered with an extra-high roof and, as with most commercial vans, windowless solid-body sides or half windows. Ford's E-Series commercial vans supply buyers with free racks/bins cargo packages that include fully installed steel shelving, drawers and cabinets, and a safety partition that lets you access a work area through the passenger compartment. Ford's EconoCargo System provides insulated polyethylene panels covering the walls and ceiling. Other options on Ford E-Series commercial vans include upgrade packages for electrical contractors, appliance repair, plumbing and general delivery businesses. On Ford's E-150, E-250 and E-350 Super Duty vans, you can choose a sliding cargo door of one that opens out at no extra cost.

Shelves and storage compartments that can be accessed from outside the vehicle via drop-down, prop-up, lockable partitions are popular with those who need toolboxes at the ready. If the manufacturer of the van you want to buy doesn't offer the fittings you need, there are dozens of independent suppliers that can make the alterations.
