A Good Read

Entrepreneur,  Feb, 2001

You may discover the best ones combine business and pleasure.

When I was growing up in New York, I hated the cold, snowy month of February. The only positive was the frigid temperatures kept me indoors, giving me more time to read. Reading has been my passion ever since I can remember. And whenever I get my hands on a good read, I spread the word.

Truly good books can be understood on many levels, and the subject of this month's cover story is no exception. I didn't rush to read J.K. Rowling's first Harry Potter book when it came out--it's a children's book, and I don't have any kids. But I can't resist buzz, so I gave in. I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and was immediately hooked.

Now, I know you're busy and probably don't have much time to read novels--kid's fantasy novels at that. But there's more to Harry than meets the eye. The first four books are full of lessons about business and life. If I still haven't persuaded you to find the time for Harry, turn to page 62 and read Geoff Williams interpretation of Harry's entrepreneurial insights.

Like you, I don't have a lot of time for pleasure reading. I fill my hours getting information to help you run your companies. For reading that gets down to business, check out our Web site at www.entrepreneur.com. If you're interested in franchising, drop by the Franchise Zone, where you'll find everything you need to know about franchising. If you know any young entrepreneurs just starting out, help them brave the sometimes precarious waters of business start-up by telling them about www.bizstartups.com. Entrepreneur's StartUps, formerly a print magazine, makes its e-zine debut this month. Every month, entrepreneurs can find original articles packed with insight and inspiration about getting their businesses up and running.

A few months ago, we added the "Solutions For Growing Businesses" tag line under the logo on our cover. And we give you even more solutions at Entrepreneur.com--thousands of pages of archives and tools, as well as new information that's posted daily. It's an essential site for all entrepreneurs.

If you'd like to learn more about the entrepreneurs featured in Entrepreneur, go to www.sbtv.com (Small Business Television). SBTV features resources specifically aimed at small-business owners.

Let me tell you about my favorite "other" media. If you're in the NYC area (or you get the WOR radio network in your city), listen to Ken & Dana Dolan on WOR-AM. Wednesday is entrepreneurs day, but every day you'll hear news essential to managing your money and your business. Then there's the Entrepreneurs Only TV show on CNNfn, which offers business data and inspirational entrepreneurs.

When I started working here in 1978, we were one of the few resources and the only publication for entrepreneurs. Today, numerous magazines and Web sites offer information. Knowledge is power, so choose wisely. With our depth of experience and intimate knowledge of who you are and what you need to create and grow a successful business, I believe Entrepreneur and Entrepreneur.com are your best choices.
