Wired hospitals offer better care, study says

Health Management Technology, Feb, 2005

Patients in the Veterans Affairs (VA) system, where doctors nationwide have electronic access to everything from old treatment notes to recent X-rays, received 67 percent of the recommended care for their conditions, according to a study published in the Dec. 21 Annals of Internal Medicine. Patients in a comparison group of non-VA, unwired outlets received just 51 percent of the care recommended.

The study of 26 conditions--from depression to diabetes to heart care--in 1,588 men over age 35 was funded by the VA, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and other sources. The study team included researchers with the VA, the Rand Corp. and several universities.
