Health Management Technology, April, 1998 by Ann McGrath

NHM/IT attendees are looking for answers to the question of how technology can provide a solution to business issues and problems within managed care, according to Crowninshield. "The managed care industry is faced with many challenges and opportunities. To be effective as change agents within their organization, senior IT health care executives must wrap their arms around developing strategies to resolve business challenges and opportunities and understand the abilities that IT has in responding to them," says Crowninshield. "Executives attending NMHCC and NMH/IT have the opportunity to explore these issues with key managed care players."

This year the NMH/IT program is being kicked off with the first-ever plenary session, featuring Marshall Ruffin, MD, MPH, MBA, FACPE, President/CEO, The Informatics Institute. The session, "Managed Care 2001: IT Solutions" will help attendees:

* Understand trends in managed care administration, disease and case management, quality improvement, provider profiling and cost management;

* Determine the needs of internal and external constituents of managed care organizations for information;

* Assess the information system requirements to satisfy constituents' needs for information;

* Evaluate cost and competitive implications of alternative information technologies; and,

* Identify information technologies to satisfy organizational requirements.

Following Dr. Ruffin's opening session, attendees will have more than 30 additional sessions to choose from within the five NMH/IT Topic Tracks. These sessions will provide attendees with case studies, panel presentations and brainstorming sessions. The five NMH/IT Topic Tracks are:

* Information Technology for Managed Care;

* Information Technology for Hospitals & Integrated Delivery Systems;

* Data Collection & Management;

* Applications & Integration; and,

* Internet & intranet.

"The issues covered in these sessions are topical and informative," says Crowninshield. "They will give NMH/IT attendees a wealth of ideas and information about technology tools and solutions they can bring to their organizations to help them meet their business objectives."
