Payphone/hot spot power dilemma

America's Network, August 1, 2003

As WiFi wireless LAN technology continues to receive heavy hype, one of the best near-term opportunities for service providers in this area may be to convert underutilized payphones to more lucrative WiFi hot spots. Several carriers, including Verizon and Bell Canada, already have announced such plans.

But carriers quickly encountered a major hurdle on the road to widespread payphone conversion. It seems between 40% and 60% of payphones have no power available.

Hearing about this, however, ADC quickly stepped in, announcing recently that it would develop a product to deliver power over the phone wiring from the service provider network.

"One of ADC's unsung capabilities is line powering," says CEO Rick Roscitt, who is expecting big things from the hot spot power solution that the company is developing.
