Motorola falling

America's Network, Jan 15, 2005 by Grahame Lynch

The Motorola spin doctors went into overdrive recently when Gartner revealed that Samsung had overtaken it to gain the second spot in global handset market share. With new models such as the Razr coming out, the market share figure was just a temporary blip and would change back to normal in the next quarter, according to Motorola.

Maybe so. But there are plenty of signs that the Koreans are doing to mobiles what the Chinese have done to broadband equipment and the Indians to back-office work. Not only did Samsung overtake Motorola, but fellow Korean company LG climbed over SonyEricsson to take fifth spot. Interestingly, LG's recent CDMA cellphone successes in the United States have driven its global growth.
