UNCF takes initiative in international education programs - noteworthy news - United Negro College Fund - Brief Article
Black Issues in Higher Education, July 4, 2002
William H. Gray III, president of the United Negro College Fund, backed up his call for a national policy on international education with a highlight of his organization's initiatives:
Institute of International Public Policy (IIP): In 1994 UNCF partnered with the U.S. Department of Education to offer undergraduate students from underrepresented groups the opportunity to study abroad, participate in international internships, develop foreign language skills and pursue graduate studies in international affairs. The program is open to all minority students.
International Development Partnerships (IDP): A five-year performance-based cooperative agreement between the United States Agency for International Development and UNCF, IDP provides technical assistance to historically disadvantaged institutions of higher education in South Africa. Aid includes leadership development, fiscal management, curriculum development and student leadership, as well as establishing exchange programs between those institutions in South Africa and American universities.
International Internship Programs: UNCF supports a number of corporate internship programs that provide international work experiences for students. Business majors, for example, have the opportunity to work in offices around the world--Europe, Asia, Africa--laying down the foundation for a global understanding of the international marketplace.
