20th Anniversary Conference
Scholars, policy-makers, college administrators, and foundation and association executives from around the country helped Black Issues In Higher Education celebrate its 20th anniversary at its first national conference, "Benchmarks & Barriers for People of Color in Higher Education," held in Crystal City, Va., June 17-19. Approximately 600 participants attended various concurrent sessions on issues such as careers in higher education, technology and presidential leadership, and were inspired by the words of Drs. Johnnetta Cole, Freeman Hrabowski and Belle Wheelan among many others. The two-and-a-half-day conference culminated with a gala and presentation of the John Hope Franklin Distinguished Contributor to Higher Education awards. Recipients included the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, historian Dr. David Levering Lewis and Dr. Sybil Mobley, dean emeritus, Florida A&M University's School of Business and Industry.
