Lower Percentage of Hispanic, American Indian Students Enter UC Berkeley - Brief Article

BERKELEY, CALIF.

The percentage of Hispanic and American Indian freshman students entering the University of California-Berkeley declined this year, the university recently announced. However, the percentage of Black freshmen increased.

Out of a freshman class of approximately 4,000 students, Hispanic freshmen make up 9.1 percent of this year's incoming class, down slightly from 9.3 percent last year. American Indian freshmen enrollment dropped by hall making up 0.3 percent of the 2004 class in contrast to 0.6 percent last year.

The percentage of Black freshmen at Berkeley increased to 3.9 percent, up from 3.6 percent last year. The percentage of Asian American freshmen remained almost unchanged at 44.8 percent, down from 44.9 percent last year.

The University of California stopped considering race in admissions in 1998. In 1997, the year before the policy change, 770 under-represented minorities planned to enroll at Berkeley -- 300 more than this year.
