* Colon, Jesus. A Puerto Rican in New York and Other Sketches. International Publishers. 1982. First published in 1961, a warm and colorful memoir that offers a snapshot of the immigrant entrepot that was New York in 1917.

* Flores, Juan. From Bomba to Hip Hop (Popular Cultures, Everyday Lives). Columbia University Press, 2000. An encyclopedic and yet deftly written study of Puerto Rican culture and Latino identity -- a must read for anyone interested in these issues.

* Gonzalez, Juan. Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America. Viking, 2000. A highly readable history of U.S. immigration -- more journalistic than scholarly, but covering all the major issues from a socially committed stance.

* Rodriguez, Richard. The Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez. Bantam Books, 1983. Controversial and influential memoir, with provocative stands on affirmative action and bilingual education.

* Saldivar, Jose David. Border Matters. Remapping American Cultural Studies. University of California Press, 1997. An exploration of corridos, novels, poems, short stories, punk and hip-hop music, ethnography, paintings, performance, art, and more in this critique of the so-called homogeneity of U.S. nationalism and pop culture.
