Alabama A&M University's State Black Archives, Research Center and Museum received a two-year $332,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The grant will be used to enhance and expand museum operations and program capabilities at the campus facility.
Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Ark., received a $2 million grant from the Winthrop Rockefeller Charitable Trust to purchase books and resources for the college's new library and technology center.
St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, N.C., has received $1 million for scholarships from Sarah I. Delany and Dr. A. Elizabeth Delany, the famed centenarian sisters and co-authors of Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years. The two sisters, along with their eight brothers and sisters, were born and raised on the campus of St. Augustine's College and graduated from the college.
Savannah State (Ga.) University's marine sciences program has received $192,000 in federal funds for its new marine aquaculture project, which will create new partnerships, courses, research and internship opportunities for students at Savannah State.
Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., has received a $200,000 grant from the Glaxo Wellcome Foundation to support an endowed science and mathematics scholars program at the university.
Three historically Black institutions will share a $700,000 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Renewal to make improvements on their campuses and in their surrounding neighborhoods. Tennessee State University will receive $200,000; Fisk University, $250,000; and Meharry Medical College, $250,000. The schools will use the money for such things as demolishing dilapidated buildings and getting rid of graffiti. The funds will also go toward a redevelopment plan for commercial and residential areas.
