Arizona State University's colleges of Business and Engineering and Applied Sciences will receive a five-year $3 million grant from the Ford Motor Co. The money will help pay for faculty salaries, scholarships, undergraduate and graduate fellowships, research, curriculum development, technology upgrades, building renovations and career management services.
California State University-Northridge's Center for Community Service Learning has received $110,000 in grants and government allocations to develop new classes and support student involvement in meaningful community service linked to course content. In addition, CSUN received $1.2 million from the U.S. Department of Education for a new education program designed to prepare teachers for the urban classroom.
Mississippi Valley State University has received a $35,000 grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality for improvement to its campus water systems.
Norfolk State University in Virginia received $2.9 million in grants from NASA to help in its quest to become stronger in the areas of science and technology. The university will use the money to develop materials for optics and lasers, give high school teachers an opportunity to do space science research and help prospective teachers embrace science, math and technology.
Nazareth College of New York has received a five-year $160,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources & Services Administration, to help improve the health care of older adults in the greater Rochester area.
A University of Massachusetts-Amherst women's center received a $392,298 federal grant aimed at preventing date rape and other attacks on female students. Part of the grant money will be used to hire two full-time people to run training programs for campus police and residence hall workers to handle reports of sexual assaults.
