U.S. Transportation Secretary Announces $1.2 Million Partnerships with Minority Institutions - Brief Article
Black Issues in Higher Education, Nov 23, 2000
The Federal Highway Administration will partner with 10 minority-serving institutions for transportation and research and technology activities valued at more than $1.2 million, announced U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater last month.
The agreements, made through the Federal Highway Administration's new competitive assistance program, are part of the agency's ongoing commitment to educational and minority outreach.
"These cooperative agreements are a win-win for everyone -- promoting educational achievement and transportation innovation will lead to improved highway safety and help protect the environment," Slater says.
"They underscore President Clinton and Vice President Gore's commitment to education and the application of technology to meet the needs of America in the 21st century and new millennium."
The program's goal is to foster research and technology activities that will contribute substantially to the highway administration's mission and help prepare the faculty and students at these institutions to successfully participate in the competitive research arena.
The 10 minority institutions participating include: University of New Mexico; Texas Southern University; Florida A&M University; University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez; Howard University, Washington, D.C.; South Carolina State University; Jackson State University, Miss.; Florida International University; New Mexico State University; and North Carolina A&T University.
