The percentage of minority full-time faculty at Title IV-eligible postsecondary institutions in the United States remains relatively low. African American, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian/Alaskan native faculty members account for a total of 13.4 percent of full-time faculty at such institutions while their White counterparts account for 83.9 percent of full-time faculty at Title IV-eligible postsecondary institutions, according to 1997 data from the U.S. Department of Education. U.S. Department of Education data off all 1997 shows that Black faculty are most prominent in the state of Georgia; Hispanic and Asian faculty in New York; and American Indian/Alaskan native faculty have the highest numbers in California. In addition, faculty salaries are higher private higher education institutions compared to public colleges and universities. The average faculty salary at a four-year institution is $54,211 and $45,652 at a two-year college, according to 1997-98 data from the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics.
