Education Department Offers New Funds to HSIs, Tribal Colleges - Hispanic and Native American serving institutions and - Brief Article

Black Issues in Higher Education, Dec 21, 2000

The U.S. Dept. of Education is offering new grants to support improvements at Hispanic-serving colleges and universities and tribal institutions.

The Education Department made applications available Nov. 30 for new grants under the Title V HSI grant program and the Title III Higher Education Act program for tribal colleges, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian institutions. Federal funds for these programs are insufficient to guarantee funding for all eligible institutions, particularly HSIs, advocates say. As a result, the Education Department's annual competition for new funds draws heavy interest.

The application deadline for eligible colleges is Feb. 2. For more information, see the Nov. 16 Federal Register, pg. 69291, or visit their Web site at <http://www.ed.gov/hsi>.
