NSF Gives Grant to Boost Minority Graduate Degree Production - National Science Foundation grant to New Mexico Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate - Brief Article

A New Mexico alliance is getting a $2.5 million federal grant to increase the number of minority students pursuing advanced degrees in the next five years.

The National Science Foundation grant went to the New Mexico Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate, which wants to triple the number of minority graduate students in math, science and engineering at New Mexico State University, the University of New Mexico and New Mexico Tech.

The project will coordinate efforts to support minority graduate students in science, math and engineering statewide; increase recruitment, retention and graduation of minority doctoral students; and give help to those interested in pursuing academic careers. NMSU will be the lead institution.

The alliance institutions also will cooperate with other Southwest universities that have a large minority enrollment, as well as with Sandia and Los Alamos national laboratories, tribal colleges in New Mexico and programs that provide academic mentoring for minority undergraduates.
