ACADEMIC

THEOPHILUS DANZY will be the head football coach for the football program that is being reinstated at Stillman College (Ala.) in 1999, after nearly 50 years. Danzy has head-coaching experience at several colleges, most recently at Alcorn State University in Mississippi. Danzy earned a bachelor's and a master's degrees in health, physical education, and recreation, both from Tennessee State University.

DR. WILLIE HOOKER has joined the art department at North Carolina A&T University. Hooker, an internationally recognized artist whose work includes sculptures and drawings, comes from Dillard University in New Orleans, where he was coordinator of the art department. Hooker earned a bachelor's degree in art education from Tennessee State University; a master's degree in studio painting from Peabody Vanderbilt University; and a doctorate in art education from Illinois State University.

KIM MILES has been named assistant dean of financial aid at Pasadena City College in California. Most recently, she was the senior advisor for financial aid at California State University-Los Angeles. Miles earned an associate's in arts degree from Pasadena City College; a bachelor's degree in journalism, and a master's degree in counseling, both from California State University-Los Angeles.

WANDA L. OCHEI has been appointed coordinator of Judicial Affairs and commuter student services at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. She comes from Cleveland State University, where she was assistant to the dean for Judicial Affairs. Ochei earned a bachelor's degree in business education from East Carolina University; and a master's degree in student personnel administration from Central Missouri State University.

DR. MARIAN GRAY SECUNDY has been named the director of the new Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at Tuskegee University. The Center is one of the action steps launched following President Bill Clinton's apology to the nation for the infamous U.S. Public Health Syphilis Study. Previously, Secundy was a professor in the Howard University College of Medicine. Secundy earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Vasser College (N.Y.); a master's degree in community organization/social work from Bryn Mawr College (Pa.); and a doctorate in medical humanities/bioethics from the Union Graduate Institute (Ohio).

DR. LOUIS STOKES, the former U.S. Congressman, will join the faculty of the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University as a senior visiting scholar in the practice of social policy and community revitalization. His three-year appointment begins in February. Stokes earned a bachelor's degree from Case Western Reserve University; and a law degree from Cleveland Marshall Law School. He has an honorary doctor of laws degree from Case Western Reserve University.

ASSOCIATION

DR. GEORGE C. HILL, a professor of microbiology at Meharry Medical College, has been elected to membership in the prestigious Institute of Medicine, an affiliate of the congressionally chartered National Academy of Sciences. He is one of 55 health professions scholars across the nation elected to membership in IOM this year. Hill earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Rutgers University; a master's degree in parasitology and biochemistry from Howard University; and a doctorate in biochemistry from New York University. He also did postdoctoral work in biochemistry at the University of Kentucky and Molteno Institute at Cambridge University in Great Britain.

HONORS

ROBERT M. RUGGLES, dean of the School of Journalism, Media, and Graphics Arts at Florida A&M University, has been named The Freedom Forum Journalism Administrator of the Year. The award recognizes outstanding administrative leadership in the advancement of journalism education. Ruggles has a bachelor's and a master's degree, both in journalism and both from the University of Oklahoma.

DR. HERMAN L. TOTTEN, regents professor and associate dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of North Texas, is one of two 1999 recipients of the Association for Library and Information Science Education Award for Teaching Excellence. Totten earned a bachelor's degree in music education from Wiley College; and a master of library science, and a doctorate in education and library science, both from the University of Oklahoma.
