FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.

Students at Fayetteville State will have to maintain at least a C average to live on campus next fall because the university expects about 600 freshmen to seek housing. The school has space available for 1,200 students. About 4,300 students are enrolled at the university.

Gail Taylor-Hilliard, associate director of residence life, says the requirement should help ease the housing problem at the historically Black institution.

"We already know from the onset that there will be a shortage of housing space," she says. "We're looking at ways we can help minimize that problem."

This school year, the university housed more than 80 students at an area Best Western hotel.

The school has been identified as a "high-growth" institution by the University of North Carolina system. Enrollment is expected to grow to about 6,000 students by 2008.
