TEMPLE TO HEAD PERALTA COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT

DR. RONALD J. TEMPLE has been named chancellor of the Peralta Community College District in Oakland, Calif. Previously the president of community colleges in Detroit and Philadelphia, his last position was as chancellor of the City Colleges of Chicago. Temple earned his bachelor's degree in American history and government from Eureka College, a master's degree in modern European history and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Cincinnati.

ACADEMIC

DR. EDWARD J. BLAKELY has been appointed the dean of the Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy and professor in the urban program at the New School University in New York City. Previously, he was dean and professor in the School of Urban Planning at the University of Southern California. Blakely earned a bachelor's degree in history, political science, and economics from the University of California-Riverside; and a master's degree in history and development studies from the University of California-Berkeley.

THOMAS J. ELZEY is the new executive vice president/chief operation officer at Howard University. He had served as vice president for business and fiscal affairs and treasurer since 1995. Elzey earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Bradley University; a master's degree in public management and policy from Carnegie Mellon University and two doctorates in economic development and management, and education from the University of California-Los Angeles.

DR. JUANITA FAIN has been appointed vice president for administration at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Previously the dean of enrollment management, she came to UNLV from Ohio University, where she was associate vice president for administration. Fain earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Knoxville College; a master's degree in educational psychology from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville; and a doctorate in higher education administration from Ohio University.

DR. BILLY C. HAWKINS has been named executive vice president/vice president for academic affairs at Mississippi Valley State University. Most recently, he was vice president for academic affairs and professor of education at St. Paul's College in Virginia. Hawkins earned a bachelor's degree in teacher education from Ferris State University; a master's degree in education administration from Central Michigan University; and a doctorate in education administration from Michigan State University.

ASSOCIATIONS

DR. CLINTON BRISTOW JR., president of Alcorn State University in Mississippi since 1995, has been elected to the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He earned a bachelor's degree in history and social psychology from Northwestern University; a master of business administration from Governors State University (Ill.); and a doctor of jurisprudence degree, and doctorate in higher education administration and public administration, both also from Northwestern University.

DR. CASTELL V. BRYANT, president of the north campus of Miami-Dade Community College, was recently named as a member of the Commission on International Education for the American Council on Education, the nation's higher education umbrella association. She will serve a two-year term through December 2001. Bryant earned a bachelor's degree in library science/business administration, and a master's degree in administration of adult education programs, both from Florida A&M University; and a doctorate in adult education from Nova University.

DR. GEORGE T. ROWAN, professor in the department of resource development and director of Michigan State University's David Walker Research Institute, has been appointed president of the National Council of African American Men, an organization that addresses issues affecting Black males. Rowan earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education, and a master's degree in elementary education and general school administration, both from Indiana State University; and a doctorate in educational administration from Michigan State University.

HONORS

DR. BARBARA SOLOMON has been presented a Presidential Medallion, the highest honor awarded to a faculty member by University of Southern California President Steven Sample. Dr. Solomon is honored for 30 years of work as a scholar, administrator, and civic leader. Currently on sabbatical, Solomon was the vice provost for faculty and minority affairs, and a professor of social work. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Howard University; a master's degree in social work from the University of California-Berkeley; and a doctorate in social work from the University of Southern California.
