Black Issues in Higher Education, April 27, 2000

* Central State University, in partnership with the Battelle Memorial Institute, has received a $50,000 grant from the Ohio Technology Action Fund to establish an Environmental Technology Incubator for the historically Black institution. The purpose of the Incubator is to enhance the university's role in the region's economic development by creating new jobs, products and processes. It also allow students to work with the area's business leaders and entrepreneurs.

* The College Fund/UNCF has received a S 170,928 grant from the Bell Atlantic Foundation to support the organization's Corporate Scholars and Leaders for the Future Program.

* The Education Development Center Inc. has received a five-year, $5 million grant from the National Institute of Alcohol and Drug Abuse and the U.S. Department of Education to conduct the Social Norms Marketing Project. The project is a study that will evaluate a media campaign designed to decrease high-risk alcohol consumption among college students.

* Hampton University has received a three-year, $294,894 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for a summer program to improve the math skills of high school students. Twenty students will participate in each program, living on campus and taking courses in algebra or pre-calculus and Introduction to Research Topics in Mathematics.

* Miami-Dade Community College's Veterans Upward Bound program has received a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The 16-week program, designed to serve veterans who do not have a degree, provides academic counseling; refresher courses in English, reading, math and computers; referrals for social services; tutoring; career counseling and training; and assistance with job placement.

* Southern University-Baton Rouge has been awarded $5.1 million from the National Institute of Environmental Health Services for research by the biology department into butadiene, a common pollutant in petrochemical industrial areas of Louisiana and Texas. The university's department of psychology also received a $2.2 million grant from the National Institute of Drug Abuse to test the effects of a preventative program designed to deter the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among Louisiana's African American youth.

* The University of Colorado at Boulder has received a two-year, $220,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The money will help provide need -- based financial assistance to undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Engineering and Applied Science and the mathematics and applied mathematics departments.

* The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey has received an anonymous gift of $1.25 million that has been used to create an endowed professorship of developmental biology for the Child Health Institute of New Jersey.

* Winston-Salem State University has received $100,000 from the Tom Joyner Foundation that will be used for student scholarships based on achievement and need.
