Bill to help active military personnel with student loans, tuition - Washington Update - Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students - Brief Article

Black Issues in Higher Education, April 24, 2003 by Charles Dervarics

The U.S. House of Representatives earlier this month approved a bill to help active-duty military who were attending college or paying off student loans prior to their call to active duty in the Persian Gulf.

For those with loan payments, the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students, or HEROES Act, would relieve military personnel of payments while on active duty. It also would provide a full refund of college tuition and fees for students, such as reservists, who were unable to finish a course of study before a call to active duty. Sponsors say the measure also would help these students return to school after completing their service.
