Harvard Officials Name Professorship After Producer Quincy Jones - Brief Article

Black Issues in Higher Education, May 11, 2000

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Harvard University has named an African American music professorship after Quincy Jones, the legendary producer-arranger-composer who has a record 77 Grammy nominations.

The Quincy Jones professorship of African-American music is supported by a gift from Time Warner Inc. Harvard spokeswoman Rebecca Rollins did not disclose how much Time Warner donated, but she says that endowments of this type are "usually $3 million and up."

It is the first endowed professorship in African-American studies given to any American university by a corporation, Harvard officials said in a statement earlier this month.

The professor named to the post will hold a senior, tenured position on the school's faculty with a joint appointment in the music and Afro-American studies departments.
