Black colleges and Hispanic-serving institutions are eligible for new grants to promote outreach to their local communities.

Black colleges and universities can apply for $9.9 million in federal dollars to address poverty and economic development needs in or near their campuses. About $6.6 million is available for previously funded grantees, who can obtain three-year grants ranging up to $550,000 each. New grantees can receive up to $340,000 for three years.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development competition also contains $6.4 million for Hispanic-serving institutions to address housing, revitalization and economic development issues in or near their communities. Individual grants are available up to $600,000 for three years.

Another $2.9 million is available for tribal colleges, which can seek funds to expand their own facilities to serve students, as well as members of their communities.
