FTC Chairman Robert Pitofsky has expressed the importance and necessity of the "Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998". The legislation seeks to force web sites to provide notice of their online information practices and to obtain consent from parents prior to dealing with children aged 12 and under as well as to provide greater parental control and confidence when using the Internet.
