New figures from International Data Corp (IDC) show that in 1998 approximately 1.4m smart handheld devices, worth over US$1bn, shipped in Western Europe. The company expects further growth in palm-size PCs in 1999 due to the release of new models including colour-screen palm-size PCs from Windows CE vendors. The smart phone segment again is expected to see a boost in growth when handset vendors such as Nokia and Ericsson introduce EPC-based and WAP-enabled smart phones toward the end of this year and in 2000.
