TELECOMWORLDWIRE-30 August 2000-University of Washington to test WWDM technology (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Lucent Technologies, California-based telecomms products supplier Canoga Perkins and the University of Washington have agreed to conduct what they believe is the industry's first enhanced wideband wave division multiplexing (WWDM) trial transmitting in the previously untapped 1400 nm region of the optical fibre spectrum.

The trial, which will begin in 4Q'2000, will take place at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington state, using Canoga Perkins' 6000 Series WWDM optical networking system and Lucent's AllWave fibre.

The use of WWDM technology will enable the university to utilise virtually all of the fibre spectrum providing up to twice as much operating capability on each fibre.
