GlobalTel has introduced a commercial satellite telephone service in Russia.

The service brings wireless service to almost the entire country, much of which has only limited access to basic telephone service, as well as up to 200 miles off the Russian coasts.

Initially the satellite service is being provided only through GlobalTel's gateway in Moscow, and later this quarter service to central and eastern Russia will be provided through gateways in Novosibirsk and Khabarovsk.

The service, which includes basic phone services including voice mail and SMS text messaging, is being exclusively provided by GlobalTel for Globalstar. Fax and data services are planned for early 2001.

Handsets are priced from USD999, with call charges within Russia ranging from USD1.19-1.99 per minute.
