TELECOMWORLDWIRE-27 December 2000-Online Christmas shopping in the UK predicted to double this year (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

The proportion of Internet users in the UK doing some Christmas shopping online is expected to double this year compared to 1999, according to research from Taylor Nelson Sofres Interactive.

The research indicates that some 44% of regular UK Internet users will have bought Christmas presents or food or drink over the Internet this year, compared to just 22% last year.

This equates to just over 4m online Christmas shoppers with an estimated total spend of GBP700m. The average spend per online shopper has increased from GBP110 each in 1999 to GBP180 each in 2000. Nevertheless, despite this encouraging growth, Internet shopping accounts for only about 3% of the total UK population's Christmas spending.

The most popular online Christmas purchases are books, music, computer software/games and electrical goods. Eighteen percent of respondents said they would be purchasing food and drink online for Christmas this year.

Taylor Nelson Sofres interviewed a representative sample of 805 regular home Internet users.
