TELECOMWORLDWIRE-3 May 2000-Vodafone AirTouch begins global WAP trial (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Mobile communications company Vodafone AirTouch Plc and business and financial adviser Ernst & Young have begun what they claim is the world's first international WAP trial.

Under the pilot scheme ten Ernst & Young partners and staff in the UK, the US and the Netherlands have been equipped with WAP-enabled mobile phones which they will use to access WAP-based information, such as their office Lotus Notes, personal calendar and e-mail, from the Ernst & Young data network.

The system utilises Vodafone Airtouch's WAP service, forwarding requests via Vodafone Airtouch's WAP gateway over the Internet to Ernst & Young's content server and then returning the WAP-compatible content back over the Internet via the WAP gateway to the user's WAP handset.
