Hitachi Ltd has released the first 64- and 32-Mbyte secure MultiMediaCard products with content protection.

The cards combine flash memory and a controller in a single chip and feature a high degree of built-in security including encryption and decryption functions according to Hitachi. Compatible with earlier MultiMediaCards, the new cards are suitable for music distribution and similar applications in digital personal devices such as mobile phones, pagers, portable music players, toys and games machines, digital cameras and PDAs.

Both the 64- and 32-Mbyte cards feature a data readout rate of 14 Mbit/s and a write speed of 3 Mbit/s, and achieve low-voltage operation at 2.7 to 3.6 Sample shipments of the 32-Mbyte HB288032SM1 will commence in November 2000 and sample shipments of the 64-Mbyte HB288064SM1 will be available from January 2001 in Japan.
