TELECOMWORLDWIRE-6 October 2000-BBC wins cybersquatting case (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

The BBC has won back the rights to the URL bbcnews.com after it was registered by a cybersquatter.

The UN body WIPO, which arbitrates in cybersquatting cases, ruled that the US company Data Art Corporation had no right to the trade mark or address and had registered it in bad faith.

According to the BBC, visitors to the site are currently directed to a variety of web sites including those which provide online gambling, soft porn chatlines and trivia game shows.

Data Art Corporation has allegedly registered several other high-profile trademarks as web addresses with the aim of selling them back to the trademark holder at substantial profit. The company offered no response to the complaint.
