The semiconductor company STMicroelectronics and the Japanese electronics maker Hitachi Ltd have signed an agreement to establish a company that will develop and license RISC microprocessor cores based on Hitachi's SuperH architecture.

The new company, which will be called SuperH Inc, will license the SH-4 core and all subsequent SuperH cores to the open market to enable customers worldwide to create new system-on-chip embedded microprocessor designs. In addition it will work to complete the final development of the 64-bit SH-5 processor and take over the development of the future SH-6 and SH-7 cores.

According to the partners the SuperH cores are most suited for digital consumer, automotive and telecomms applications such as digital set-top boxes, car navigation systems, digital cameras and portable information appliances.

SuperH will have its headquarters in California and operations in the UK and Japan.
