TELECOMWORLDWIRE-30 August 2001-Serial ATA Working Group releases Serial ATA specification (C)1994-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

The Serial ATA final 1.0 specification - a replacement of the current parallel ATA physical storage interface - has been released at the Intel Developer Forum, held in California.

The specification was developed by the Serial ATA Working Group, which consists of 74 companies active in the silicon design, cable/connector, storage and systems industries. The interface can be used to connect such internal storage devices as hard disks, DVDs and CD-R/Ws to the motherboard in desktop and mobile PCs, value servers and network storage.

The Serial ATA Working Group hopes the new technology will provide a storage interface that meets the needs of computers for the next decade, by offering features including a scalable performance starting at 1.5Gb/s, 100% compatibility with current operating systems and a low pin count.

The first storage solution based on the new specification is expected in 1H'2002.
