TELECOMWORLDWIRE-14 March 2001-Sema wins GBP8m mobile ticketing contract in Britain (C)1994-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

The passenger transport company National Express Group Plc has selected a mobile ticketing system from the Anglo-French IT and business services firm Sema for launch across its nine UK train operating companies.

The new AVANTIX Mobile system runs on the Windows-powered Pocket PC and uses touch screen-based technology. It also has a custom-built printer and can be smartcard enabled.

Unlike the technology currently in use across the UK rail network, AVANTIX Mobile can print rail tickets to and from anywhere in Britain, including tickets that open the London Underground barriers. In addition the system will provide a portable database of the entire UK rail timetable.

The contract is worth GBP8m. The first new mobile ticketing units will be introduced to National Express' Gatwick Express company in 4Q'2001.
