Skygate pilots new technique that bars ripping/encoding of music CDs to MP3 format - Brief Article

Telecomworldwire, Sept 12, 2001

TELECOMWORLDWIRE-12 September 2001-Skygate pilots new technique that bars ripping/encoding of music CDs to MP3 format (C)1994-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

The UK-based Internet/e-commerce security consultancy Skygate Technology has launched a new technology designed to prevent music CDs from being ripped and encoded as MP3 files.

Skygate says it developed the technology because of the absence of a satisfactory audio copyright protection system, enabling MP3 files derived from copyrighted music CDs to be distributed via the Internet - in spite of the recent California court ruling stopping web users from being able to use Napster to swap copyrighted songs.

Skygate is currently piloting the technology. Further information can be found at http://www.skygate.co.uk.
